What is Odin Sphere?
Odin Sphere is a side scroller action RPG developed by Vanillaware, the same people that did Princess Crown for the Sega Saturn back in 1997 and then re-released for the PSP in 2005 both releases Japan-Only. Odin Sphere is considered to be a spiritual successor to Princess Crown, not a sequel even though the gameplay is similar but the story do not connect.
When does it come out? And how much it will cost
It comes out in Japan May 17, 2007, in the U.S. we get it a week later May 22, 2007. Sorry, no confirmation for PAL release yet, but don't get your hopes down. The U.S. price is now official and its at the EBGames website, it'll cost $39.99, you can pre-order now since knowing Atlus it might have limited printing. No Pre-order bonuses have been announced, however, Japan gets a nice artbook as a pre-order bonus.
Will this game have Dual Audio?
I see this question alot in topics and I just want to clear it up once and once and for all, yes, it does have both Japanese VAs and English VAs, I believe its a little treat from Atlus to us. Please do not insult people who prefer Japanese VAs or English VAs, keep your comments to yourself.
There was no word that the Japanese version has English VAs as well, but they're released almost simultaneously, its possible.
This game looks a lot like Valkyrie Profile...
I've seen this a lot recently and I just want to clear it up for all of you. No, this game looks nothing like Valkyrie Profile but they do have similarities and very minor ones. VP may have 2D side-scrolling maps but the battles are turn-based. There is also a lot of micro management involved in VP, which Odin Sphere does not have. They both have Norse Mythology, true, but they have different elements from it. VP is developed by Tri-Ace, Odin Sphere by Vanillaware. No, Odin Sphere didn't borrow anything from VP, it borrowed almost everything from Princess Crown which is a game that Vanillaware also developed in 1997, which is a game that came out 2 years before VP was even out.
How do you play it?
According to IGN, the gameplay is pretty deep, everything has a second job apart from its main use, for example, if you use a healing potion it does two things, it heals you and it gives you experience so that you can increase your health, so your HP does have levels. In the game there is two kinds of levels, as I mentioned earlier your HP level and your Psypher level. Both are displayed in the HUD of the game on top of a shield. Next to the shield is two meters, one says POW the other HP, HP is self-explanatory but POW by looking at the videos is used to increase strength for your combos and Psypher. Below the shield is another meter called the Psypher Gauge, you fill this up in order to use Psypher Spells, each spell requires a specific amount of Psypher Gauges. There is another mechanic called Phozons which are the souls of the enemies your kill, you collect these Phozons to fill up your Psypher Gauge and POW meter and to increase Psypher Level.
The Game is separated into stages, and each have their own objectives, if you do the objectives correctly you get points and depending on the amount of points (or performance on stage?) you get a rank for each stage ala Devil May Cry.
According to the Atlus website, they estimate that gameplay time is more than 40 hours.
How many characters can you play as
You can play as 5 characters from different kingdoms (all in war) in the entire game, here are their names and a little Bio to each:
Gwendolyn
Proud Valkyrie Princess
Daughter of the Demon Lord Odin, sorcerer king, and a princess of the Kingdom of Ragnanival in the frozen north. She is a courageous Valkyrie whose name is known and feared on the battlefield, yet her older sister Griselda is even more skilled in the ways of war. Growing up in her sister's shadow has led Gwendolyn to be quiet and reserved, but she will stand up against anyone when necessary.
Cornelius
Tragic Prince
The prince of the kingdom of Titania. One day, Cornelius awoke to discover that he was in a land he had never seen before, and he had been transformed into a beast. His love for Velvet, a foreign princess, drove him to make his way home, yet he feared in his heart that she would stop loving him if she knew what he had become. Cornelius is a serious young man with a strong sense of justice, but his youth leads him to hold naive, idealistic views.
Mercedes
Young Fairy Princess
The princess of the Fairy Kingdom of Ringford, and next in line to be Queen. She is a bit timid, but won't hesitate to act recklessly to prove her abilities to her mother. Following her mother's death, Mercedes is forced to become Queen at an early age. She strives to become a mature and strong leader to live up to the memory of her mother.
Oswald
The Shadow Knight wielding a blade of darkness
A cold-blooded human warrior serving the Fairy Kingdom of Ringford, Oswald is renowned and feared as the Shadow Knight, the man who slew a great dragon. He was abandoned as a child, but was taken in by Melvin, nephew to the Fairy Queen Elfaria. He is a stoic man who lives to serve his adopted father, and cares little for the consequences of the actions he is ordered to perform. As a result of his training and skill, he places little value in his own life.
Velvet
Princess of a fallen kingdom, haunted by a curse and death
The surviving princess of the kindom of Valentine, which was mysteriously destroyed in a magical explosion. To hide her identity she fled to the forest of Elrit , and became known as the Forest Witch. She pieces together the prophecies foretelling the end of the world. Though usually serene and composed, she is now desperately trying to figure out a course of action that will somehow halt the Armageddon. She detests her father, Odin, because his actions caused the death of her mother.
