    Mimo, że odtwarzacze Blu-ray nie muszą odtwarzać płyt DVD i CD, to i tak większość producentów daje taką mozliwość. Dlaczego więc HD DVD jest bardziej przyswajalne dla PC? Póki co nie ma powszechnie dostępnych nagrywarek HD DVD, a nagrywarkę Blu-ray można bez problemu kupić. HD DVD ma standardowo taką samą warstwę ochronną jak DVD. Blu-ray ma obowiązkowo tę warstwę wzmocnioną, np. Durabis.
